The Resuscitation Council UK published updated Basic Life Support guidance in October 2025. One important change is that 999 should be called immediately when a person is unresponsive. Carers should not delay the call while trying to confirm whether the person is breathing normally.
While waiting for the call to be answered:
- Check whether the person is breathing normally.
- Follow the ambulance call handler’s instructions.
- Start CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
- Deliver chest compressions at 100–120 per minute.
- Compress the chest to a depth of 5–6 cm.
- Use an AED as soon as one becomes available.
Gasping, panting or slow, irregular breathing should not be mistaken for normal breathing. Early recognition, an immediate 999 call, effective CPR and rapid defibrillation can significantly improve a person’s chance of survival.
Regular BLS training ensures carers understand the latest guidance and have the confidence to act when every second matters.
