Recognising Early Signs of Depression in Clients

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition that can affect a person’s mood, thinking, and ability to carry out daily activities. Early recognition of depression can help prevent deterioration and improve overall wellbeing. Common early signs include:

Persistent low mood: Ongoing sadness, tearfulness, or feelings of hopelessness.
Loss of interest or motivation: Withdrawal from activities the person previously enjoyed.
Changes in sleep or appetite: Sleeping too much or too little, or noticeable changes in eating patterns.

Carers play a key role in observing these changes and raising concerns appropriately. Early discussion with healthcare professionals allows for timely support, treatment planning, and improved outcomes for the individual.
